SherAli has been teaching at F&M since 2012. He received his PhD in Religion/Islamic Studies at Duke University and his BA at Macalester College. His work centers on Muslim intellectual thought in modern South Asia with a focus on intra-Muslim debates and polemics on crucial questions of law, ethics, and theology. His book project “Contesting Muhammad in Modernity: Tradition, Reform, Innovation” that explores polemics over critical questions of law, theology, and politics among major Muslim scholars (' ulama') in modern South Asia is under contract with the University of South Carolina Press. He is also interested in the intersection of secularism and Muslim intellectual thought.
