I'm having a similar issue when trying to connect a Samsung i730 device w/ WM5 using a Serial USB connection (RNDIS will not work for what I need). I'm using a utility from another manufacterer (HTC) called 'USB Switch'.

It's supposed to force the device to connect with ActiveSync via a USB serial connection rather than using a RNDIS (IP) connection. Windows recognizes the device being connected in Device Manager, but AS is unable to recognize a mobile device.
